The 39-year-old center held a special press conference in his hometown of Barcelona on Wednesday, where he announced his retirement. Gasol began his career playing for FC Barcelona. Symbolically, he ended his journey in the same city.

Throughout his 20-year career (2003-2023), Gasol became an NBA champion (2019), an NBA Defensive Player of the Year (2013), he's a three-time All-Star (2012, 2015, 2017), and a member of the All-NBA First Team (2015).

Gasol has won two FIBA World Cup gold medals with the Spanish national team (2006, 2019), five EuroBasket medals (gold - 2009, 2011; silver - 2007; bronze - 2013, 2017), and two Olympic silver medals (2008, 2012).

After his career in the NBA, where he played for the Memphis Grizzlies, the Toronto Raptors, and the Los Angeles Lakers, Gasol returned to his home country of Spain to help Girona advance to the top Spanish basketball competition - Liga Endesa (ACB).

Gasol, the president of Girona, played for the team for two seasons. During the 2021-22 season, he led the team to the LEB Oro trophy, which guaranteed the advance to ACB.

According to Shams Chanaria of The Athletic, Memphis Grizzlies is planning to retire Gasol's number 33 jersey.

Last year, he was one of the most efficient players in the league and ensured the organization stayed in the top division.
