The surgery will address a displaced flap of the meniscus, Shams Charania from The Athletics adds. As such, the player will be out for an extended period of time.
The possibility of Embiid returning to the court this season remains, Wojnarowski reports. However, the recovery timeline will become clearer only after the procedure.
If surgery is necessary for a meniscus tear, recovery can take anywhere from three to six months. Having previously been regarded as the favorite to win the MVP award for the second year in a row, Embiid will miss out on the accolade due to the 65-games-played rule established last offseason.
Before the injury, Embiid led the league in scoring, averaging 35.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game.
