"I'm told that the hope is that [Joel] Embiid misses one to two months... If a full repair is needed in surgery, that's going to be a significantly longer recovery time period," Charania said on the RunItBack show.
Adrian Wojnarowski from ESPN reported that the reigning NBA MVP will undergo surgery to repair a left meniscus injury.
The surgery will address a displaced flap of the meniscus,Shams Charania from The Athletics added. As such, the player will be out for an extended period of time.
The possibility of Embiid returning to the court this season remains, Wojnarowski reports. However, the recovery timeline will become clearer only after the procedure.
If surgery is necessary for a meniscus tear, recovery can take anywhere from three to six months. Having previously been regarded as the favorite to win the MVP award for the second year in a row, Embiid will miss out on the accolade due to the 65-games-played rule established last offseason.
Before the injury, Embiid led the league in scoring, averaging 35.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game.
