Stein adds it is not yet known if the talks will progress to something more serious.
After an underwhelming start to the season, Williams averages 8.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game in 45 appearances for the Mavericks.
Meanwhile, Portis averages 12.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assist per game in 50 matches for Milwaukee.
Williams, 25, is in the first year of a four-year, $53.3 million contract. Portis, 28, makes $11.7 million this season and has two seasons left on his deal, including a $13.4 million player option for 2025-26 after this one.
Milwaukee is as eager to make a move this week as any team in the league in hopes of fortifying its four-man core of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, Khris Middleton, and Brook Lopez.
However, as Stein notes, the Bucks' ability to make a trade depends on its willingness to part ways with Portis or Pat Connaughton.
