"2022 wasn't really a championship team [compared to] the championship teams I've been on. It wasn't really a championship team," Green stated, in reference to the previous iterations of the Golden State, which included players like Kevin Durant, who was the Finals MVP in the 2017 and 2018 finals, and Russell Westbrook.
The power forward reminisced that he and Curry had a hard time believing that they were progressing through the playoffs in the 2021-22 season. That year, the Warriors beat the Denver Nuggets 4-1 in the first round, then eliminated the Memphis Grizzlies 4-2, and defeated the Dallas Mavericks 4-1 in the Conference Finals.
"After every series, me and Steph [Curry] would be walking to do an interview after we won a series, and we'd walk and laugh like, 'Yo, how are we winning these series right now?' And we literally would laugh like, 'This is funny.'"
Eventually, the Warriors were matched with the Boston Celtics, the latter of which was favored to win the championship that year against an aging and injury-prone Warriors.
"That's also when Steph took that next step like, 'I'm really one of them GOATs [greatest of all time].' And he carried us. That was the toughest one. We weren't favored," Green remembered that year. "Everybody was calling us too small, Boston, they're too athletic, they're too big, we didn't stand a chance. And we went and made it happen."
Green is right in crediting Curry for turning the series around. While the Celtics had a 2-1 advantage and were minutes away from winning another game in their home, TD Garden, Curry suddenly turned back the clock in Game 4. The superstar put up 43 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists on 14/26 field goal shooting to snatch the win in Boston.
On a more personal note, a factor contributing to Green's high opinion of the season is a personal rivalry between himself and former teammate Kevin Durant.
"So that one was my favorite one, and then also, I told [Kevin Durant], 'I'm going to win one when you leave here.' I did that. So, that one was the most fulfilling for me," the power forward concluded.
In the post-season of the Warriors' 2022 championship run, Green averaged 8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block per game.
