"Just a chance to win. That's all I care about," James stated when asked about his desires for his last contract.
As the sixth player in EuroLeague history with the most appearances without a title, James stressed the importance of the length of the contract he seeks.
"Probably three [years]. Three would put me in a 15-year professional career, which is a good career. After that, I could ride off into the sunset," James smiled.
As for where he might sign his final contract—whether in Monaco or with another traditional powerhouse—James remained confidential.
"I don't know. I'm not even worried about that at this point, as weird as that sounds. I feel that's too far in the future, and I feel like we got a chance to do something special this year," responded James.
"This group and how I've seen everybody grow just from last year to this year is just special. The way we've matured even over this year is just amazing to watch. It's amazing just to go on to battle with people who know exactly what they're supposed to be doing and know exactly what you're going to do, and we just find a way to do exactly what we need to do and come out on the other side.
Whether it's win or lose, this group has just stayed together all year through the ups and the downs and through whatever's going on. I think we've been a team through the whole thing, which has been refreshing, honestly," James gave credit to his teammates.
With 18 wins in 28 games, Monaco ranks in the top 4 of the standings, aiming to climb as high as the 2nd seed in the last 6 rounds.
"I'm just focused on that right now, and whatever happens in the summer, happens in the summer. I'm up for a lot of things this summer, with shoe deals and all that type of stuff, so I'll worry about all that later. There's a lot to worry about right now," he smiled.
This year, Mike James is averaging a career-high in efficiency, boasting a 21.3 PIR per game, in addition to 19.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 5.2 assists.
Having joined Monaco just before their EuroLeague debut in 2021, James is on his longest tenure with a single team since turning pro in 2012.
