According to Adrian Wojnarowski from ESPN, the NBA outlined an increased focus on officiating in a meeting with the league's competition committee.
Namely, the NBA is set to focus on players hunting fouls and going off their presumed path to the basket into defenders to get a foul call. This emphasis, which was outlined to the officials in the months of January and February, is said to have been one of the factors that contributed to a recent scoring decline.
While there's been a 4-point and 1.9-foul decrease recently, Wojnarowski notes, the league told the committee "there was no directive from the league office to reduce scoring."
The trend will continue to be monitored, the renowned journalist adds."Future evaluation at future committee meetings will determine whether rule and/or interpretation changes should be considered next season," the memo writes.
