As the local crowd in Fernando Buesa Arena was celebrating the win during a timeout at the last minute of the game, the club's dancers and mascot were performing in the middle of the court, and one of the lights fell almost directly on their heads.
Following the incident, Baskoniareleased an official statement, saying it was one of the video scoreboard lights. The next day after the incident,Baskonia announced they had made the decision to terminate the contract with the arena's technical supplier after determining it to have been a human error by one of the technicians.
Now, the Basque club might face legal consequences itself. According to Carlos Perez de Arrilucea from El Correo, a file has been opened against the club by Vitoria-Gasteiz's Security Department, claiming the required conditions were not maintained during the high-level event and describing it as a serious offense.
If charged, Baskonia will have to pay a fine from €30,000 up to €120,000. Meanwhile, Baskonia maintain that the fault falls to the now-former contractor. The club now has 14 days to present their official arguments. The decision is expected to be made in about a month, Perez de Arrilucea writes.
