"It was a decision that was made. I'm not a national team coach, just a basketball player. I'm here to give 100%. I was a little surprised, a little disappointed... Very disappointed," he corrected himself. "I think it was the biggest disappointment of my life, of my career. But that's how it is. That's life, that's basketball. It's not one of the things I control. I can control what I do on the court."
Collet had earlier justified Luwawu-Cabarrot's exclusion by pointing out the abundance of talent in the shooting winger position, with players like Evan Fournier, Nicolas Batum, and Bilal Coulibaly offering similar qualities.
Despite his absence from the FIBA World Cup 2023, Luwawu-Cabarrot was called up for the FIBA window last February and scored 15 points against Croatia.
During the Tokyo Olympics, the 29-year-old averaged 9.0 points and 3.5 rebounds. He also contributed to France's second-place finish in FIBA EuroBasket 2022, recording 4.9 points per game.
In the recent EuroLeague regular season, Luwawu-Cabarrot averaged 13.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.1 steals over 28 games (20 starts) for ASVEL.
