Mitchell is under contract for next season and has a $37 million player option for 2025-26. This summer, he is eligible for a four-year extension, and the Cavaliers are prepared to offer him a max extension worth around $200 million.
If Mitchell doesn't sign an extension with the Cavaliers this offseason, Cleveland is believed to look to trade him before he hits free agency in the summer of 2025.
However, NBA insiders Shams Charania, Joe Vardon, and Jason Lloyd of The Athletic report that there is growing optimism within the league that the Cavs will secure Mitchell's commitment and keep him in Cleveland long-term.
If Mitchell decides not to extend with the Cavaliers, several teams, including the Lakers, Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets, New Orleans Pelicans, Houston Rockets, and Memphis Grizzlies, are expected to pursue a trade for him, according to Hoops Wire.
For instance, Hoops Wire's source mentioned that the Cavaliers would likely ask for Tyler Herro and Jaime Jaquez Jr. from the Heat in any potential trade talks involving Mitchell.
