According to Adrian Wojnarowski from ESPN, the NCAA is working toward banning player prop bets on all college athletes. The league is working with US states that still allow prop betting and their officials to enforce this new measure.
"Sports betting issues are on the rise across the country, with prop bets continuing to threaten the integrity of competition and leading to student-athletes and professional athletes getting harassed," NCAA president Charlie Baker said.
Props are bets on players' statistics, including points, rebounds, assists, or three-pointers made in a game.
The NBA has been under severe criticism lately, and a number of league members came out against betting. Namely, Indiana Pacers' star guard Tyrese Haliburton has said the fans are disregarding him as a player and treating him as a prop bet. Cleveland Cavaliers head coach JB Bickerstaff said he's received threats from gamblers for betting-related things.
Most importantly, the NBA has suspended Toronto Raptors big man Jontay Porter for allegedly participating in prop betting involving his own performance.
The NBA has recently included live betting into its NBA Game Pass app, allowing users to bet on games seamlessly without leaving the app. Outside of basketball, MLB superstar Shohei Ohtani's interpreter has been caught stealing money from the player to allegedly use it for betting.
