After the game, Jokic had nothing but praise for the San Antonio Spurs youngster.
Player of the Game EFF 46 Nikola Jokic Points 42 Accuracy 18-32 Rebounds 16 Assists 6
While Jokic registered a dominant double-double of 42 points, 16 rebounds, and 6 assists, Wembanyama was close to achieving just the fifth quadruple-double in NBA history.
The French phenom scored 23 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, dished out 8 assists, and had 9 blocks.
"He's still young, it's still early to say. He's learning, basically, every game. Every game is new for him. He's learning the matchup, he's learning the floor balance, he's learning who's guarding him. I think he just needs games, and he will figure it out," Jokic said about Wembanyama in the post-game press conference.
"Aaron [Gordon] was guarding him the whole second half, and he's our best defender, even KCP (Kentavious Caldwell-Pope). I think that's a show of respect that we have the best player guard him basically the whole second half. To answer your question, I don't know yet," Jokic said when asked about Wemby's improvement since their last matchup. "He's humble, he's working hard, and he's still hungry. That's a very good combination."
Even though Jokic amassed 42 points during the win against the Spurs, he admitted playing against Wembanyama was very difficult.
"I didn't do a good job today, he blocked six or seven shots. He's a special player. You always need to do special or extra things to score against those guys. I think when he learns and figures it out, he's gonna be an even bigger problem," the Serbian superstar said.
During the first quarter, Jokic dunked over Wembanyama during a fast-break, an episode that was followed by smiles from both players.
"I was just, 'At least I'm gonna be aggressive and try to dunk it, why not.' And then it was funny," Jokic remembered.
"I said, 'If you're gonna block more shots, I'm gonna... something.' But he blocked like four after that, so I didn't do anything about it," Jokic commented, making the entire press conference laugh.
