UFC St. Louis medical suspensions: 2 fighters face indefinite layoffs until cleared
Following a record-breaking weekend at UFC St. Louis, nine fighters received medical suspensions, including two athletes with indefinite layoffs until cleared by a physician.
The Missouri Office of Athletics confirmed the suspensions to MMA Fighting on Monday.
Mateusz Rebecki, who started strong but then faded late against Diego Ferreira, faces a mandatory 90-day suspension after being battered and finished with just nine seconds left in the fight. In addition to the 90-day suspension, Rebecki also faces an indefinite suspension until he’s cleared by a neurologist.
Following the war with Ferreira on Saturday night, Rebecki showed off the gruesome aftermath with a viral photo displaying all the cuts, blood, and bruising on his face.
Terrance McKinney also received similar suspensions after suffering a brutal first-round head kick knockout loss courtesy of Esteban Ribovics on the undercard. A fast start from both fighters ended just seconds later after Ribovics uncorked a head kick that sent McKinney crashing to the ground in a heap.
Like Rebecki, McKinney faces a mandatory 90-day suspension, but he must also gain clearance from a physician before he can compete again.
Throughout his UFC career, McKinney has carried the “go big or go home” mantra like a badge of honor, with his latest outing sending him back home with a medical suspension and his second knockout loss in his past five fights.
While medical suspension are available, the Missouri Office of Athletics does not disclose salaries without a release from the fighter involved.
