Thompson, currently in the final season of his five-year, $190 million contract, is earning $43.2 million for the 2023-24 season. A four-time NBA champion and a five-time NBA All-Star has spent his entire career in the Bay Area after going 11th overall in the 2011 NBA draft.
Despite being extension-eligible with the Warriors, reputable sources like The Athletic's Shams Charania and ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski suggest that Thompson might explore free agency in July.
Before this season began, the Warriors offered Thompson a two-year extension valued at around $48 million, but he declined, hinting at a disparity in expectations between him and the team.
Thompson, 34, faced significant setbacks due to knee and Achilles injuries, causing him to miss two consecutive seasons and a chunk of the 2021-22 season.
However, he made a strong comeback last season, playing 69 games and averaging 21.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists.
This season, his stats have slightly dipped, with averages of 17.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. Despite this, Thompson maintains a respectable 43.0% field goal percentage, though his three-point shooting has seen a small decline at 38.4%.
