His streak, which was the seventh-longest in NBA history, had recently surpassed Elvin Hayes' record of 60 consecutive double-doubles from Oct. 30, 1968, to Feb. 22, 1969.
This achievement marked the longest streak since the NBA and ABA merged for the 1976-77 season, surpassing Kevin Love's mark of 53 straight.
Sabonis' last game without a double-double was back on November 28, 2023, when the Kings faced off against the Golden State Warriors.
The Lithuanian said after the loss to the Thunder that he was proud of his streak.
"I mean, it's awesome," he said. "You're mentioned with some of the greats. At the end of the day, you're just out there trying to play your game and go out there and win. That's my job as a big man -- to get rebounds and to finish."
Despite the loss and the end of his streak, Sabonis remained focused on team success. When asked if he was aware of the jeopardy his historic stretch was in during the late stages of the game, he replied, "No, I mean, we're just trying to win. At the end of the day, you know, we're trying to get 3s and trying to get this game back."
The record for the longest streak of double-doubles is held by Wilt Chamberlain, who set an outstanding mark of 227 consecutive double-doubles, as reported by the Elias Sports Bureau.
