Real Madrid have many players on expiring contracts this summer. Just like Walter Tavares, Mario Hezonja and Sergio Llull, Vincent Poirier has not yet extended his stay with his team.

The French center, who is currently in the best form of his Real Madrid career, spoke to French outlet Basket Europe about his contract, which is set to expire at the end of the season. Poirier arrived at Real Madrid in 2021 and has won the Euroleague and ACB titles, as well as three Spanish Super Cups.

"We talk about it a lot. It's hard to leave. The city is very nice. The facilities are first-class. And there is the myth of Real Madrid," the Frenchman said.

"I grew up watching football, so Real Madrid is crazy. You are in the company of great players, of course. People look at you in a funny way when you lose 2-3 games, but that's why we play basketball," the international big man continued.

"I talk to other players on other teams, it would be difficult for me to go back to certain organizational details. It is complicated and Real Madrid knows it perfectly. This is my last year of contract, I have a son and I couldn't spend a year here and a year there. Stability is important in a career. The goal is to get to the end and leave a mark, so counting the trophies and medals is great,” Poirier stressed.

Real Madrid will have their work cut out for them in the summer as Rudy Fernandez retires and many other players are entering the final months of their deals.

"Rudy Fernández is about to retire. Sergio Llull is 35 years old. Sergio Rodriguez also talks about retirement," Poirier reflected.

"The historic players will leave and the team will have to renew itself. I think we have 9 players at the end of their contracts, which will change the dynamic because the club likes to keep players for a long time, but the GM is smart enough to handle this and I'm sure they already have their mind put into it," he concluded.

This season, the 30-year-old center is averaging 8.9 points and 5.4 rebounds in the EuroLeague and 8.3 points and 5.8 rebounds in ACB play. On Tuesday, he will engage in another Euroleague playoff series with Real Madrid, this time against Baskonia, his former team.
