However, the Nuggets rebounded for Game 3 and acquired a 90-117 away victory to rejuvenate their hopes.
After the game, team head coach Michael Malone explained that he resorted to an unconventional tactic to motivate his players.
"I had an edit made, and I wasn't sure if I was going to show it to the guys. I showed it to DeAndre Jordan, and he said, 'Oh hell yeah, we got to show it to the guys,'" Malone began recounting.
"It was a two-minute edit of every talking head in this country saying that the series is over, the Nuggets are done, it's a wrap, they're toast, Minnesota is a better team... All the big personalities, you know who they are."
"[It's] not that they are wrong. This is not a shot at those people because after the first two games, [I] probably would've said the same thing," he explained. "I didn't want to show it because, most of the time, I don't give a damn about what they say, but I knew that this would maybe strike a chord deep inside you."
"Like, everybody and their brother are saying that you're out, you're done. You guys can't play; they're better than you. If that doesn't resonate within you as a competitor, I don't know what will," Malone continued. "So yes, our guys answered the bell and they showed me that they still believe. That was my biggest question: 'Do you believe?'"
"Getting on that plane on Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. Are you going to believe that we can go up there and win two games? We're halfway there, got a long way to go," he concluded, hinting at Game 4 on May 13, which will once again be played on the Timberwolves' court.
After the outcome of Game 3, the series is currently 2-1 in favor of the Timberwolves. Denver will try to wrestle back the homecourt advantage in Game 4.
