Zalgiris Kaunas added deep range and experience to its roster by signing a free agent Niels Giffey to a one-year deal, with option for another, the team announced June 18. 30 year-old played for ALBA Berlin last season and averaged 8 points per game on almost 42% 3-point shooting in the EuroLeague.
“I’m really excited to join you next season,” said Giffey in team released video. “Can’t wait to work with Coach Schiller and to show up in great Zalgiris arena.”
Giffey has spent the last 7 seasons with the ALBA Berlin. Last Sunday he won German championship as the ALBA defeated FC Bayern Munich 3-1 in the final series. It was Giffey’s second career German title. He averaged 10.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 10.7 efficiency rating during the regular and 6.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 8 efficiency rating during the finals series.
Berlin born and raised, Giffey played for the University of Connecticut in 2010-2014 winning two NCAA championships. After collegiate career Giffey returned to Germany to start his professional career.
Giffey is currently with the Germany national team and preparing for the Olympic qualifying tournament in Split (Croatia) where his team will compete against Russia, Mexico, Tunisia, Croatia and Brazil for the sole ticket to the Tokyo Olympics.
