Pablo Laso not done: Will coach Real Madrid for two more seasons / News - Basketnews.com
Longtime Real Madrid coach Pablo Laso agreed on a new two year extension with the Spanish club. Laso (53) joined Real in 2011 and helped lead the team to a new golden era. Despite losing multiple players to injuries and NBA teams last season, Laso managed to lead Real to yet another EuroLeague Playoffs appearance, where his team threw a real challenge to eventual champions, Anadolu Efes.
In 10 seasons with the club, Laso has led Real to six EuroLeague Final Fours, winning the competition twice (in 2015 and 2018). He also guided the team to two more EuroLeague Finals appearances (in 2013 and 2014), losing against Olympiacos Piraeus and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Laso won the EuroLeague Coach of the Year award in 2015 and 2018, joining Zeljko Obradovic, Ettore Messina and Dimitris Itoudis as coaches with more than one such award.
With Laso leading the team, Real have won five Spanish League titles and six Spanish Copa del Rey crowns. They have also raised the Spanish SuperCup trophy six times and won the Intercontinental Cup title in 2015. Laso recently surpassed Lolo Sainz for the most games coached with Real. With Laso behind the wheel, Real Madrid have an impressive 214-93 record in EuroLeague (69.7%).
Before becoming coach, Laso spent two seasons playing for Real and winning the 1997 Saporta Cup title, as well as reaching the 1996 EuroLeague Final Four. He remains the Spanish League's runaway all-time leader in assists (2 896) and steals (1 218).
