Valencia announces new head coach, re-signs veteran guard / News - Basketnews.com
After parting ways with coach Jaume Ponsarnau, Valencia Basket quickly found a new replacement. Joan Penarroya, 52, spent the last two years coaching Hereda San Pablo Burgos.
The Catalan specialist led his team to three titles: the 2019-20 and 2020-21 editions of the Basketball Champions League and the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2021. Before directing the Burgos team, Peñarroya was in charge of MoraBanc Andorra and Baxi Manresa. He has accumulated seven seasons of experience leading teams in the Liga Endesa, Spain.
Valencia also made another roster move by re-signing team veteran Sam Van Rossom, Sportando.com reports. Van Rossom, 35, will wear the orange for his ninth consecutive season.
The 1.88 m guard averaged 7.3 points, 3.8 assists and 9.2 PIR over 22.5 minutes in 33 EuroLeague appearances last season. Meanwhile in the ACB League, he averaged 8.1 points, 3.5 assists and 9.7 PIR in 33 games (21 MPG).
Last season, Valencia's run in the ACB league was cut short in the semifinals, where the team lost the series 1-2 to the Real Madrid.
Valencia just missed the EuroLeague Playoffs this year, finishing in 9th place. This means that the Spanish squad is out of next season's EuroLeague picture and will compete in the EuroCup instead.
