Legendary career that started in 1999 came to an end. 38-year-old Vassilis Spanoulis announced about his retirement in a social media post.

"I told club presidents that it was time to close the biggest chapter of my life, so I thanked them for what we had achieved together," Spanoulis wrote. "It was a difficult decision, but it was not sad.

Basketball gave me a unique journey full of great emotions. It gave me everything, and I gave it to him as well. Olympiacos was my most beautiful port. I leave basketball proud of both what was conquered and what was lost after hard battles.

I wholeheartedly want to thank the men who have been around all year. I want to thank the presidents, coaches, teammates, rivals, but most of all the fans for their love. It was this love that gave me the strength to strive every day. Thank you all.

Vassilis Spanoulis, a kid who dreamed of playing basketball."

Spanoulis won the EuroLeague title three times, and in 2013 he was named league's MVP. His collection includes three EuroLeague Final Four MVP awards. Spanoulis also won Greek national championship seven times. He played for Olympiacos Piraeus for the past 11 seasons.

With the Greece national team, Vassilis Spanoulis won the European Championship in 2005, took the second place in the World Championship in 2006, and won a bronze medal in the European Championship in 2009.

During the 2006-07 season, Spanoulis played for the Houston Rockets in the NBA.
