Prior to the tipoff of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, four teams seemed to have an advantage over their opponents. Lithuania, Croatia, Serbia and Canada were given the responsibility of staging the tournaments in Kaunas, Split, Belgrade and Victoria respectively.Their goal was to attain a much-coveted victory and travel to Tokyo for the Olympic Games. But things did not turn out as expected. After Serbia's 95-102 loss to Italy in Belgrade, the puzzle of the hosts' presence in all tournaments was completed. None of the organizing countries managed to secure a spot in the Olympics. Some were defeated in the semifinals and others in the final game, failing to live up to the expectations.

Lithuanians were defeated by Slovenia 85-96 in the Kaunas final Croatia lost by 76-86 to Germany in the semi-final of the Split OQT Serbia watched Italy leave the Stark Arena victorious by 95-102 after the final game Canada were defeated in a dramatic fashion by the Czech Republic (101-103) in the semi-final of the OQT in Victoria

Three of the four countries that defeated the hosts got the ticket to the Olympic Games. And all Olympic berths were earned by teams from the Europe.
