Tokyo Olympics will be held behind closed doors / News - Basketnews.com
The upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games will be held without spectators, as Japan declared a coronavirus state of emergency.
The ban will run throughout the biggest sporting event scheduled to run from July 23 to August 8.
Japanese Olympic Committee head Seiko Hashimoto called it “a very heavy judgment,” adding that due to the state of the pandemic they have “no choice but to hold the Games in a limited way.”
Reuters report that because of banned spectators, the costs of the Tokyo Olympics will likely increase one more time. At the moment, it is estimated that $15.4 billion were already spent for the preparation of the Games.
It was thought that ticket revenues would reach around $815 million mark, but now this number will be close to zero.
Last March, International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics due to the coronavirus pandemic. Tokyo Olympics became the first Summer Olympic Games which were postponed.
