According to the announcement on the federation's website, the enormous insurance requirements were the main reason that prevented the Los Angeles Lakers point guard from joining his national team.

"I would have loved to have been there in Tokyo. It's the Olympic Games, that's pretty much the greatest for an athlete, and I've always dreamed of participating in the Olympics.I am of course very disappointed that I cannot play and fight with the team in this important tournament," said Shroder in the statement. "But I'm very happy for all twelve guys who are going to Tokyo now. They played a great qualification together and deserved to be part of it.As a team, they have shown enormous solidarity and I am convinced that with this attitude they can also achieve something in Tokyo."

"We had to reckon with this development. But of course, it is clear that we left no stone unturned for a world-class player like Dennis," head coach of the national team Henrik Rodl explained. "Dennis is part of the team, which he showed in Split. We are very happy with his support."
