Barcelona interested in Gabriel Deck but his situation is very complicated / News - Basketnews.com
Spanish powerhouse Barcelona is still looking to bolster their roster for next season, despite their financial difficulties. As reported by Spanish reporter Jose Ignacio Huguet of El Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona is monitoring situation of the Argentinian wing Gabriel Deck situation.
Gabriel Deck
Position:SF, PFAge:26Height:199 cmWeight:105 kgBirth place:ArgentinaProfileNewsStatisticsThe interest between the former Real Madrid player and Barca is reportedly mutual, but the situation is not as simple as it may seem from the outside.
Deck's contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the next season is not fully guaranteed and the team has until August 30 to make a final decision. With this kind of uncertainty, the player's entourage is also looking for other options in the European market and that's where Barcelona comes in. The two sides have had exploratory discussions but the situation has not advanced yet.
According to El Mundo Deportivo, when Deck left Real Madrid for the NBA, Los Blancos and the ACB agreed that Real was going to have a "right of first refusal" for any offer the player would have received in the Spanish market. This would be applicable even if Deck paid in full the amount of his release clause.
But according to article 17.4.5 of the collective bargaining agreement between the ACB clubs and the player's association, "the amount of the release has to be paid simultaneously with the decision of exercising the right to terminate the contract." Deck's release clause was paid in two different installments, one coming from the player and the rest coming from the Oklahoma City Thunder, with just two days in between difference (according to Deck's entourage), and because of that, Real Madrid still has the right of refusal for any offer the player should receive in the Spanish market.
Deck has tried to dispute the decision made by the ACB but so far without success and a final decision regarding this case might arrive only after the Spanish season has already started, leaving the player without a real option. Per El Mundo Deportivo, other European teams are following Deck's case but the player's desire, for the moment, is to remain in the NBA and prove his value there.
