Report: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander lands max extension from Thunder / News - Basketnews.com
The Oklahoma City Thunder locked up guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with a maximum rookie contract extension, agent Thaddeus Foucher told ESPN on Monday.
The five-year deal currently is worth $172 million. However, should Gilgeous-Alexander make an All-NBA team, the value would jump to $207 million, matching the deal that guard Trae Young reportedly reached with the Atlanta Hawks on Monday.
Gilgeous-Alexander missed the second half of the 2020-21 season due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot. In the 35 games he played last season, all starts, he averaged career bests in points (23.7) and assists (5.9) while also contributing 4.7 rebounds per contest.
The 23-year-old Kentucky product owns career averages of 16.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 187 NBA games (178 starts).
Gilgeous-Alexander was selected by the Charlotte Hornets with the 11th overall pick in the 2018 draft before he was immediately dealt to the Los Angeles Clippers.
After one season in Los Angeles, he headed to the Thunder in the deal that netted the Clippers All-Star Paul George.
