The Philadelphia 76ers and the Cameroonian center are closing a four-year, $196 million supermax contract extension, per ESPN.

Embiid’s extension would start in 2023-24 and would run through the 2026-27 NBA season for a total of $261 million.

The four-time NBA All-Star was set to make $65 million over the final two years of his current deal.

Joel Embiid is a part of the 76ers since 2014 when the franchise selected him with the 3rd overall pick in the NBA Draft. Although, he missed his first two seasons because of surgeries on his right foot.

ESPN reported that his previous deal contained language that protected the team financially in case of "catastrophic injury" to his lower back or feet, but the new contract does not.

Last season the 27-year-old became regular season's MVP runner-up, averaging 28.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 51 games.

His NBA career averages are 24.8 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists (260 contests). Embiid is in elite company, joining Hall of Fame members Shaquille O'Neal and David Robinson as the only NBA players ever to average at least 24 points and 11 rebounds in their first 260 games.

The 76ers finished the shortened 2020-21 season at 49-23, earning the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. They were eliminated in the second round by the Atlanta Hawks in seven games.
