New Lithuanian Basketball Federation president eyeing next coach of the National Team / News - Basketnews.com
After winning the Lithuanian Basketball Federation presidential election, politician, ex-coach of the Lithuanian Women's NT, and president of the Lithuanian Basketball Coaches Association, Vydas Gedvilas, talked about his vision for the future of Lithuanian basketball.
Arvydas Sabonis' predecessor, Gedvilas, emphasized that the first job this new Federation needs to achieve is to find head coaches for both the men's and women's Lithuanian National Teams.
"This is our first decision. We also need a coach for the women's national team. We talked to Kazys Maksvytis, and he is the most realistic candidate to this day, but it will still have to be approved by the Executive Committee.
Kazys agreed, and he would be happy to train the NT. I think his hour is now. I do not rule out the possibility that Kazys would invite Rimas Kurtinaitis, perhaps Kestutis Kemzura or Dainius Adomaitis as his assistant coaches.
In women’s basketball, I think the first option for today is Rimantas Grigas. He has given his consent, achieved good results with the Belarusian national team, and now works with Ukrainian youth.
But I want to say that I will not be the only one to decide on the coach. Maybe other candidates will be nominated, but in my opinion, Maksvytis is the most suitable for this position."
Kazys Maksvytis is the current head coach of Parma Perm. He was the head coach of Lithuania's youth National Teams that went on to win the 2008 U16 European Championship, the 2010 U18 European Championship, the 2011 U20 World Championship, and the 2012 U20 European Championship.
The 44-year-old basketball specialist had current national team players Jonas Valanciunas, Edgaras Ulanovas, Arnas Butkevicius, and Rokas Giedraitis on his youth squads.
