Belgium’s 3x3 team might have qualified for the Olympics by cheating / News - Basketnews.com
Belgium's 3x3 national team, which participated in Tokyo Olympic Games, is being accused of cheating their way through the qualification to the Olympics.
According to the Belgium newspaper De Standaard, in 2019, fictitious tournaments were organized in which Belgium's 3x3 national team was racking FIBA rating points.
From August to October, 27 bogus tournaments were organized, and all of them were included on the official FIBA website.
It was stated that in each of those tournaments participated at least 48 players. However, the newspaper claims that the actual competitions were not organized.
With the help of these fictitious tournaments, Belgium got enough points to secure a place in the Olympic qualifying tournament. Belgium finished in 10th place at the first tournament but secured a spot in the Tokyo Olympic Games through the second qualifying tournament.
Belgium basketball federation addressed the police and asked for an investigation of a possible case of fraud. The federation itself is now conducting an internal investigation as well.
At the moment, there isn’t enough information to impose sanctions on players.
This summer, the quartet of Thibaut Vervoort, Rafael Bogaerts, Thierry Marien, and Nick Celis finished fourth in the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Those players will also participate in the upcoming FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup, known as the European 3x3 championship.
