The Boston Celtics added depth to their frontcourt, officially acquiring forward Juancho Hernangomez. The Spaniard came from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for guards Kris Dunn, Carsen Edwards, and the right to swap second-round picks in 2026.

Soon after the Minnesota Timberwolves forbid Hernangomez from participating in the Tokyo Olympics with Spain, the 2.06-meter forward was traded to the Grizzlies. However, his time in Memphis was short-lived. The 25-year-old found himself on the move again.

According to the Celtics' reporter Taylor Snow, the latest Brad Stevens move should improve Boston’s depth. It fills the need at a stretch-four position while reducing crowded backcourt after multiple offseason guard acquisitions. The trade also brings Boston's roster down to the league-mandated 15-player maximum just two weeks before the start of training camp.

Hernangomez fits the mold as someone who should coexist well alongside Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, as he is a versatile floor spacer.

Juancho averaged 7.2 points (32.7% 3PT) and 3.9 rebounds over 17.3 minutes with the Timberwolves last season. His NBA career averages are 5.7 points and 3.5 rebounds in 257 games.

The 15th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft had his major tournament debut with the Spanish national team at the EuroBasket 2017. Hernangomez averaged 8.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, 0.7 assists, and 0.7 blocks in 19.7 minutes per game. Spain won the bronze medals in that campaign.

Two summers ago, Juancho helped Spain to the FIBA World Cup gold medal, finishing as the team’s third-leading scorer behind Ricky Rubio and Marc Gasol.
