Panathinaikos down Promitheas, lift their first-ever Greek SuperCup / News - Basketnews.com
Panathinaikos OPAP Athens made the best start in the 2021-22 campaign, beating Promitheas Patras by 92-83 (26-23, 27-16, 23-24, 16-20). The Greens celebrated the conquest of their first-ever Super Cup, the only title missing from their trophy case. Dimitris Priftis's team managed to extend the club's inconceivable streak of winning at least one trophy per season to 27, with count dating back to 1995-96- the year that PAO won their first EuroLeague.
Offense was the element that gave the win to Panathinaikos against a Promitheas squad led by Spaniard Luis Casimiro. The Patras team that hosted the tournament, also featuring Lavrio BC and AEK Athens (who ended up in 4th and 3rd place respectively), came back from -14 and with some big shots, mainly by Giannopoulos, managed to cut down the Greens' lead to just five points (78-73) seven minutes before the final buzzer.
Ioannis Papapetrou scored 20 points for the winners, Okaro White followed with 15 on 11/11 free throws and 6 rebounds. However, Giorgos Papagiannis captured the MVP award, putting up 14 points on 7 of 8 two-pointers, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks.
On the other end, Isaiah Miles scored 18 points, most of which in the first half, while Nikos Rogavopoulos added 13 and Charis Giannopoulos 11.
