The New York federal court charged 18 ex-NBA players for allegedly committing fraud in a scheme to benefit from the NBA's health insurance plan illegally, Jonathan Dienst of WNBC reports.
Law enforcement officials say they were charged for defrauding the NBA's Health and Welfare Benefit Plan out of approximately $4 million.
As reported by Tom Winter of NBC, some of the players allegedly involved in this scheme include:
Milt Palacio Sebastian Telfair Antoine Wright Darius Miles Ruben Patterson Eddie Robinson Gregory Smith Glen Davis Jamario Moon Terrence Williams Alan Anderson Tony Allen Shannon Brown William Bynum Melvin Ely Christopher Douglas-Roberts Tony WrotenAccording to the grand jury indictment, the defendants were allegedly engaged in the scheme from at least 2017 to around 2020. They did it by submitting fake reimbursement claims to the NBA Players' Health and Welfare Benefit Plan for medical and dental services that were never actually provided.
Terrence Williams allegedly orchestrated the scheme by recruiting other players and offered them fake invoices.
Those charged face a count of conspiracy to commit health care and wire fraud.
