Pau Gasol talked to Spanish outlet AS in a virtual meeting during the promotion of "What is important is the journey", the four-episode documentary series that premieres on Amazon Prime Video next Friday.

Referring to life after basketball, the Spanish basketball legend made a special mention to family.

"In the NBA the numbers hit you. More than eighty percent of families break up after the player retires. It's significant. At this stage of transition, I am already involved in certain things. The IOC, Los Angeles, the Foundation, but you have to know how to manage it, be more present, take care of your family, because if you let yourself go the family is the first thing that suffers," Gasol said.As far as his future plans are concerned, the 41-year-old retired athlete revealed that he's having "conversations with several NBA teams to see what a possible relationship would be like so as not to compromise too much. I would like to explore the executive role that allows you more stability, less travel, more flexibility for other things that are important to me.Talking about his decision to retire, Pau Gasol said it was left totally up to him, although he did ask for advice from family and friends.

"You try to ask the people closest to you if you can play a little more, but it was up to me. It required a very big commitment at this point in my career. At the end of the Games, I took a month to see how I felt and be very honest with myself.

Could I have played a little more? Maybe. Under special conditions and being very aware of my physical condition. But it was a good time to retire and I am very calm and very happy," he concluded.
