Russian powerhouse 74-73 (17-19, 22-19, 19-21, 16-14) beat Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv (6-3), which had a five-game winning streak before tonight’s matchup.
Both teams went into each other neck and neck for the whole game, and the winner of the duel was decided at the very end.
With 1:40 left to play, Derrick Williams finished a fast break with the slam and reduced Maccabi’s deficit to two points (70-72).
After an unsuccessful Ioannis Sfairopoulos coach challenge, Iffe Lundberg made a basket, but Scottie Wilbekin answered with his own jumper, and the last minute of the game started with CSKA leading 74-72.
Lundberg missed a jumper, while Williams drew Grigonis’ foul. However, Maccabi’s forward made only one free throw, and with 17.6 seconds left, the visitors were trailing 73-74.
Despite that, Maccabi got another chance after CSKA lost the ball in the inbound situation. The decisive possession was given to Williams, who missed a lay-up and CSKA managed to hold off.
“It was a game that was decided by small details," Sfairopoulos said after the game. "We had the chance at the end to win the game. CSKA also scored three or four times tough shots at the buzzer that kept them in the game or in the lead. We did a great job but CSKA won in the end. I think both teams deserved to win the game.”
Lundberg led CSKA with 14 points (4/9 2PT, 2/2 3PT), 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 2 drawn fouls, and 14 PIR.
Meanwhile, Ante Zizic was unstoppable for the visitors as he finished the game with 16 points (6/11 2PT, 4/7 FT), 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 7 drawn fouls, and 26 PIR.
CSKA: Iffe Lundberg 14 (4/9 2PT), Joel Bolomboy 12, Marius Grigonis 10.
Maccabi: Derrick Williams 20 (6/8 2PT, 1/5 3PT), Ante Zizic 16 (6/11 2PT, 26 PIR), Scottie Wilbekin 9 (3/6 2PT).
