Grand plans in Barcelona: more than 400M euros to be invested in building new Palau Blaugrana / News - Basketnews.com
FC Barcelona presented plans of redeveloping the Camp Nou stadium and the surrounding area. If implemented, these changes would also affect the current Palau Blaugrana arena of the basketball club FC Barcelona.
The club's shareholders and members will assemble on December 19 and vote for the new changes. If ratified, the project is predicted to be finished in 2025.
The renewed Camp Nou complex would include a hotel, a multi-sports pavilion, and a training center.
Barcelona's members will be asked to back the board's proposal to ask for a loan of up to 1.5 billion euros for the project. However, the club believes that the renovated space will eventually pay for itself thanks to increased commercial revenues.
420 million euros would be directed towards building a new arena for the city's premier basketball team. The Nou Palau Blaugrana would have a maximum capacity of 12,500 spectators. Basketball games will invite up to 10,000 fans in the arena.
Additionally, the club plans to sell the rights to the name of both the Camp Nou stadium and the Palau Blaugrana - the home floor of FC Barcelona's basketball team. The naming rights of both venues would bring in around 48 million euros per year to the organization.
The president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, believes that it's vital for this project to come to fruition.
"We want to complete the project, which is necessary for the entity, but we have demanded some improvements and modifications that are necessary. It is a redefinition to adapt the project to the new circumstances."
According to EuroLeague regulations, each licensed club must have a home arena that can accommodate at least 10 000 fans. However, the Palau Blaugrana has a maximum capacity to fit just over 7 500 spectators.
In 2003, FC Barcelona and the EuroLeague agreed that the team would be allowed to play at the Palau Blaugrana until they re-locate to a new arena that complies with the EuroLeague regulations.
