According to the same report, the team fears he's suffered a significant injury. Ingles' knee buckled during the club's game against Minnesota on Sunday. He was helped off the floor after recording two rebounds and three assists in just over 12 minutes.
According to The Athletic, at this point, it will be a near miracle if Ingles escapes significant damage. Team doctors conducted an initial examination, and the fear of significant injury has come from that exam. "It's not even about the basketball at this point," Utah forward Rudy Gay said. "Just having him in the locker room is good for us. That's our guy."
"Seeing Joe at halftime, that took a lot out of guys," Utah point guard Mike Conley said. "Seeing him in pain. Seeing him in tears was tough. We knew how much this meant to him. All we could do was tell him that we loved him and tell him to keep his head up."
Ingles has played a key role in the team's success this season, averaging 7.4 points and 2.9 rebounds in 25.2 minutes per game. He's started in 14 of those 44 games to this point. The Aussie forward is in the final year of a contract that pays $13 million in 2021-22.
The Jazz are already playing without Donovan Mitchell (concussion), Rudy Gobert (calf), and Trent Forrest (ankle). The team also lost head coach Quin Snyder and forward Danuel House to protocols on Sunday.
Utah are 30-21 in the season and 2-8 in their last 10 games.
"I feel bad for him," said Utah assistant head coach Alex Jensen, who was filling in for Snyder. "Hopefully, it's better than we all think."
