Lyles scored 12 first-half points and the Pistons led 56-55 at the break. Towns led the Timberwolves with 14 as neither club held a lead bigger than seven points.
Minnesota changed that by scoring the first nine points of the second half, including four from Towns. Detroit came back with a 9-0 run of its own that began with a Joseph 3-pointer.
Beasley scored five points in the final two minutes of the quarter as Minnesota carried an 83-79 lead into the fourth.
Russell made two layups 31 seconds apart to give the Timberwolves a 95-88 advantage. McDaniels then knocked down two 3-pointers in a 25-second span to stretch the lead to 13 points.
The Pistons scored the next six points but Towns knocked down a 3-pointer after a timeout. Bey hit two 3-pointers in a 29-second span to cut the Timberwolves lead to 107-102. Russell made three free throws with 2:02 left to make it 112-102 and the Pistons never threatened again.
