The 54-year-old managed to guide Maccabi to three Israeli League titles in 2019, 2020, and 2021. Moreover, he became the champion of the Israeli Cup in 2021.
However, the same Israeli Cup was one of the main reasons behind firing this time, as the tension with fans arose. Maccabi lost the Tel Aviv derby against Hapoel (80-90) and finished their appearance in the competition.
According to sport5.co.il, some Maccabi fans tried to break into the locker room and curse the squad, after the final whistle.
Some of the supporters were held by security guards, but the players had to leave Menora Mivtachim Arena using a side exit instead of the usual one. Besides that, head coach Ioannis Sfairopoulos was forced to leave the arena, being accompanied by the security guards.
Maccabi management had been already expressed their trust in Sfairopoulos once this season, when the squad lost eight straight games in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. Though, his time is up now.
Maccabi sit 12th in the EuroLeague standings with 11 wins and 12 defeats. The Israeli powerhouse is third in the local competition, lurking behind Hapoel Jerusalem and Bnei Herzliya with 9 wins and 6 losses.
