"I didn't like the timeout being called. I thought it was not necessary at that moment, especially being a large lead," Howard explained in the press conference after the game. "For timeout to be called with 3 or 4 seconds to go, what I felt was unfair to our guys. That's what happened."
There were some speculations immediately after the game that touching the handshake line provoked Howard to spark a brawl. The Michigan coach denied the talks swiftly after the game.
"Oh yeah, it wasn't that. Touching me unnecessarily wasn't caused for that," Juwan Howard explained. "When we were talking, at that point I thought it was time to protect myself."
On the other end, the Howard opponents' coach put his motives into perspective on why the timeout was called at the very end of the match.
"He came up to me and pulled his mag and said 'I'll remember that' and started pointing at me and tapping me in the chest," coach Gard said in the post-game presser. "I said 'Hold on, let me explain to you why I took the timeout.' Maybe he doesn't know the rule that you get the 10 seconds reset."
Coach Howard's team was pressing the opponents throughout the entirety of the match, even when the Wisconsin team sat down their starters.
"It wasn't press, it was just 5 pressure defense man-to-man, that's what 5 is for us," Howard quickly denied the speculations.
According to coach Gard, the timeout's purpose was solely to get the ball past the half-court.
"I wasn't gonna put my players in that type of situation after a break of pressing 4 seconds, coming stiff and cold off the bench," Gard continued. "I wouldn't do it for a regular group. I need to take a timeout that gives my players the best chance of success."
"So that's where it started that he said 'I'll remember that', I said 'Hey, let me tell you why I did what I did', and he did not want any part of that," Wisconsin's head coach explained.
"Unfortunately, like I said, it overshadowed momentarily. I'm not gonna let overshadow it much longer than once I walk out of here. Our team played really well in the second half, and we've got a damn good team," Gard finished his post-game statement.
The Wisconsin Badgers won the game against Michigan Wolverines 77-63 (31-31, 46-32), led by 25 points from Johnny Davis. Hunter Dickinson was the top scorer for Michigan with 21 points.
