The 14-year NBA veteran became a free agent a week ago after the Toronto Raptors traded him to the San Antonio Spurs, where he promptly got bought out.
The 35-year-old is joining Brooklyn head coach Steve Nash who had mentored him when the two played for the Phoenix Suns.
Dragic met with the Nets on Friday, per Marc Stein of The Stein Line, choosing them over several other playoff contenders, including the Lakers, Clippers, Warriors, and Bucks. The Mavericks were supposedly another team with interest, as Dragic is a friend of star player and fellow Slovenian Luka Doncic.
The Nets were looking to bolster their backcourt, as Kyrie Irving is forced to miss games in Brooklyn and New York because of the city’s vaccine mandate. The franchise decided to waive guard Jevon Carter to clear a roster spot for Goran Dragic. Carter, 26, is averaging 3.6 points in 46 games (one start) for the Nets this season.
Dragic appeared in just five games for Toronto before stepping away from the team due to personal reasons in late November.
He has not played since November 13 after averaging 8.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in his limited time with the Raptors.
Dragic has NBA career averages of 13.9 points, 4.8 assists, and 3.1 rebounds in 872 games (524 starts) with the Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, and Raptors.
He made the All-NBA third team and was named the league's Most Improved Player in 2013-14. He was selected to the All-Star team in 2017-18.
