Basketball and war: what sanctions were imposed for clubs and countries in the past? / News - Basketnews.com
This Friday, EuroLeague will conduct a meeting between all clubs in search of solutions regarding the latest events of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
While it’s still unclear what, if any sanctions, EuroLeague could impose, such circumstances are not unprecedented.
Back in 1992, United Nations Security Council imposed sanctions against Serbian-led Yugoslavia because of its aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and many sports federations followed suit.
Basketball was no exception.
International Olympic Committee withdrew their invitation to Yugoslavia for the 1992 Summer Olympics. Moreover, FIBA also banned Yugoslavia and lifted the sanctions only after two years.
Yugoslavia claimed that despite the sanctions, the first division of the domestic league took place as usual. However, Partizan Belgrade had to deal with more difficult circumstances.
The Serbian basketball powerhouse spent one season playing in Fuenlabrada, Spain. However, they were also banned from the European competition the following season.
The crucial meeting between EuroLeague clubs will start on Friday at 12 pm CET.
