Today, Bayern announced that the German international will join the squad for the first time in eight months.
Towards the end of the Bayern Munich-Ludwigsburg clash on 4 June 2021, Zipser reported symptoms of dizziness and malaise, which he experienced almost all day.
Initially, the recommendation of the club's chief physician, Dr. Sebastian Torka, for further examinations and CT scan, were based on the suspicion of cerebral thrombosis possibly due to Johnson & Johnson's vaccine for COVID-19, which Paul Zipser had received some days prior to the incident.
However, the tests that followed showed that the 28-year-old suffered a cerebral hemorrhage due to a vascular malformation in the brain called cavernous hemangioma (cavernoma). It's a malformation of the vessels of the brain which, among other things, causes cerebral hemorrhage and although its occurrence is due in some cases to hereditary factors, often the causes of this condition are not clear.
Accordingly, Paul Zipser had to undergo surgery, which was successfully carried out, in order to remove the specific angioma that caused the cerebral hemorrhage.
In any case, Bayern Munich confirmed that Paul Zipser's cerebral hemorrhage and the surgery he underwent were not causally related to his vaccination and that initial speculation was incorrect.
Apart from Zipser, the home side is expected to have back also long-time absentees Nihad Djedovic and Darrun Hilliard.
Djedovic's last appearance was on December 26, 2021, in a German Bundesliga game against Crailsheim.
"He has problems on the knee, inside the knee. I'm so sorry for him, it must be really depressing for him," Bayern head coach Andrea Trinchieri said of his captain recently.
"He's continuously trying to come back, from one injury after the next. It's a sad story," Trinchieri said.
Hilliard was out for three months with a knee injury he picked up during practice.
The 28-year-old Pennsylvania-born swingman averaged 15.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per contest over the first 12 EuroLeague games and 11.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per BBL game.
