EuroLeague standings: new alternative of classification is being suggested / News - Basketnews.com
The standings of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague could change once again.
According to BasketNews sources, EuroLeague offered another alternative of the classification after three Russian clubs had been suspended.
Some of the teams showed their discontent with the current decision to cancel all of the results against Russian teams, scrapping both wins or losses against CSKA Moscow, UNICS Kazan, or Zenit St Petersburg.
The new suggested alternative goes like this:
Previous results against Russian clubs are left as they are Future games will be considered as simply canceled, meaning the clubs won't receive technical wins 20:0 The positions in the standings would be decided by winning percentage, not win/loss recordAccording to BasketNews sources, teams will vote over the weekend, and it will be decided with which option the EuroLeague will finish its regular season. 15 clubs' representatives will participate in voting as Russian teams are currently suspended.
It's worth mentioning that either of these options will be approved only if all Russian teams are removed from this season's competition. We remind you that the deadline for the Russian clubs' suspension is March 21st.
The main reason for the new alternative is that if all results against Russian teams are canceled, it means that almost 20% of all regular season results will be scrapped.
Furthermore, some argue that it's fairer to decide the classification of the standings by looking at the results achieved on the court rather than pretending that these games did not take place.
Moreover, the current option, in which results against Russian teams are scrapped, gave a significant advantage to some teams. For example, FC Bayern Munich, Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, and Bitci Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz would be the biggest winners.
The Germans were the only one of threeEuroLeague teams that lost all games versus Russian clubs (0-3), so now they are in 6th place instead of 11th.
Maccabi won 1 of 4 and jumped from 12th to 7th. Baskonia were 17th and now stand in 12th place.
Alternatively, the teams who won against the Russian clubs would lose their victories.
Here are the differences in the standings between the current format and the alternative one.
