Ben Simmons will not play in Thursday's Nets-76ers, but is expected to make the return trip to Philadelphia and join the team on a bench inside Wells Fargo Center, The Athletic's Shams Charania reports.

The 25-year-old is working towards making his debut for the Brooklyn Nets, as he ramps up after dealing with back soreness. There is optimism about the return to action later this month, via the report.

Simmons was acquired by the Nets in the trade deadline deal that sent James Harden to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The three-time All-Star asked to be traded from the City of Brotherly Love. The Simmons camp reportedly cited mental health issues and an inability to mesh on the court with star Joel Embiid as reasons for wanting to leave.
