It was a proposal strongly favored by Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, who had a perfect 3-0 against Russian teams.
Anadolu Efes Istanbul were on the opposing end, as the 2021 EuroLeague champs voted in favor of the decision that prevailed in the end.
With a majority of 7-6, the 13 clubs decided on scrapping both wins or losses against CSKA Moscow, UNICS Kazan, and Zenit St Petersburg. The final EuroLeague standings will be counted with 28 games for all squads.

Fenerbahce, who are 9-13 under the new format, expressed their strong disagreement with the decision and also questioned the stance of their fellow Turkish team, Anadolu Efes.
The full announcement reads:
"EuroLeague decided on February 28th by Monday, "the freezing of all the encounters with the representatives of Russia".
Our club offered various alternatives in order to resolve the extraordinary situation in the process in the fairest way for everyone by contacting both the EuroLeague management and the other 12 teams that are our partners in the EuroLeague structure from the beginning to the end of the process. In this process, we repeatedly expressed to all our stakeholders that ignoring the games which have been played and completed and also, affected the many games that were played afterward is completely in contrast with the natural dynamics of the sport. On Monday, March 7, a total of seven EuroLeague A licensed teams voted in accordance with the EuroLeague structure. Some of them took care of their own interests with regards to the standings, and some of them voted in a direction that we could not make sense of in any way.

At this point, we would like to express in particular that we are saddened to disagree with Anadolu Efes-another representative of our country in the EuroLeague-about this delicate issue, where we strongly believe in our good judgment.
We leave the assessment of this situation to the public opinion and sports fans.We want it to be known that, despite this decision, our team will continue to fight, along with our fans, in the remaining six games, in order to achieve the result it deserves."
