The 44-year-old coach was until recently the first assistant coach to Dimitris Itoudis at CSKA Moscow. This development came less than 24 hours after Itoudis was officially announced as Greece national team's head coach.
However, Turkey is not unknown to Pistiolis, as he worked in Banvit as Itoudis' assistant in the 2013-14 season, when they led the Turkish team to the top of the regular season with a 28-2 record, leaving behind Fenerbahce (24-6) and Anadolu Efes (22-8).
From 2014 until recently he worked for CSKA Moscow, while from 2005 to 2012 he was in the Zeljko Obradovic's coaching staff at Panathinaikos.
Pistiolis replaces Ekrem Memnun, who was fired following Galatasaray's recent BCL elimination.
