The news of Gordon Herbert and the German Basketball Federation (DBB) parting ways after the 2024 Paris Olympic Games surprised a lot of people. The captain of the German national team, Dennis Schroder, was one of them.

Schroder, whose year in the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets ended after the regular season, was asked his opinion about the seemingly sudden decision. The 30-year-old guard was blunt.

"Gordie called me two days ago and said, 'Listen, this is how it was decided.' But I think it's a shame that the national team didn't come to me and talk about it. I don't think anyone on our team knew that, and I think the captain should, of course, be spoken to so that I can update my guys," Schroder told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, via Express. "Of course, I wish him all the best and nothing but the best."

Under Herbert, the German national team won bronze in EuroBasket 2022 and captured gold in the 2023 FIBA World Cup last year. The squad exhibited eye-pleasing, high-scoring basketball, defeating many seemingly stronger opponents along the way.

"Of course, he's led us like no other for the last two years. Great coach. The mentality he brought to the team, the way we perform, the role distribution - that was simply terrific. Of course, I think it's a shame and sad that he can't continue," Schroder admitted.

Germany will play in Group B in the Paris Olympics alongside France, Japan, and the winner of Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) in Riga, Latvia.
