Simmons, who had an epidural injection last week to relieve the soreness, has dealt with back issues dating back to February 2020 when he missed time due to nerve impingement, according to the report.

The Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash has repeatedly said the team is hopeful Simmons will play this season.

The 25-year-old is expected to continue to work toward a return for the NBA playoffs and would make his debut whenever he is fully cleared to play, but it's uncertain when that will be, Shams Charania reports.

The Nets acquired Simmons, Seth Curry, Andre Drummond, and two first-round draft picks from the Philadelphia 76ers on Feb. 10 in exchange for James Harden and Paul Millsap.

Simmons is a three-time All-Star and two-time All-Defensive Team honoree. He has career averages of 15.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.7 assists in 275 games, all starts, over four seasons with the 76ers.

Along with the return of Simmons, the Nets are still awaiting New York City Mayor Eric Adams' ruling on the private-sector mandate for city workers.

If all restrictions were lifted, Kyrie Irving could join his Nets in home games for the playoffs starting mid-April.
