Head coachFrank Vogel has been on the hot seat for months but the Lakers stuck with him due to limited options to replace him. As the season went on, it became clear that his future with the team was in danger. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the team has officially decided to fire Vogel and will be letting him know of the decision today (Monday).
Lakers’ search expected to be lengthy and expansive with no clear initial frontrunner," Woj's tweet reads.
That came before Vogel met with reporters for what has probably been his final post-game press conference in Los Angeles.
The 2020 NBA champ with the Lakers began his presser by praising the young players, notably Austin Reaves, who became the fourth rookie in NBA history to drop 30+ points, 15+ rebounds, and 10+ assists in a game.
However, reporters were aware of the news of his firing. The problem was that Vogel wasn't exactly thrilled to talk about the report.
"I haven’t been told shit, and I’m going to enjoy tonight’s game," he said, via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
"I'm going to enjoy tonight’s game, celebrate what these young guys did in terms of scratching and clawing and getting back in this game and getting a W, and we'll deal with tomorrow tomorrow."
Vogel then reiterated his stance and insisted that he wanted to focus on the Lakers' pulling out a victory, which capped their season at 33-49. All in all, he spoke to reporters for less than three minutes.
Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka and most of the roster are expected to meet with reporters to conduct exit interviews on Monday. At the moment, Vogel is not on the schedule.
"I love the man," Malik Monk said about Vogel postgame, after putting up a career-high 41 points. "He gave me a chance. I have nothing bad to say about him."
The Lakers went 126-98 in three regular seasons under Vogel and won the 2019-20 NBA Championship in the bubble.
