Zalgiris fined for chants during Crvena Zvezda match / News - Basketnews.com
EuroLeague disciplinary judge fined Zalgiris Kaunas for fans' actions during the last regular-season game against Crvena Zvezda Belgrade, BasketNews have learned.
Zalgiris received a 9,000 euros fine and a warning.
A fine was handed because of offensive home spectators chants. During the game, there were several occasions when chants 'F**k you Serbia' were heard.
The disciplinary judge ruled that the home team was responsible for fans' actions.
Before the game, Zalgiris Kaunas players and officiating crew held a sign with a Ukrainian flag and 'Stop War' slogan. The judge noted that Crvena Zvezda had informed about the refusal to hold this sign days in advance before the match, therefore Zalgiris were responsible for the decision to display it nevertheless.
This action, the judge ruled, initiated the home crowd's displeasure with the visiting team.
The Disciplinary Judge considered as mitigating factors the fact that Zalgiris has not been sanctioned during the current season or in the course of the three previous seasons for the same infringement.
Judge also investigated an incident involving visiting fans who were deported from the arena before the game ended. The judge ruled that this situation was dealt with rapidly, avoiding an escalation of the conflict, therefore only a warning was issued.
